Since everyone seems to be speculating about when the Feb CTP of Vista will be released, I figure I will participate in the game as well.  Rumors are floating around saying the Feb CTP of Vista will be released anywhere from the 21st to early next month.  Microsoft-Watch is saying that it is expected at the end of the week or on the weekend.  I have heard other rumors that it will be delayed much further.

Today when I was browsing my MSDN Subscriber Downloads account I noticed some news on a new version of the File Transfer Manager (FTM).

Announcing FTM 5.0

On Thursday, February 23rd, File Transfer Manager (FTM) 5.0 will be released. When a new file transfer is initiated, you will be asked to download the FTM 5.0 client. Existing downloads with the FTM 4.0 will continue, only new downloads are affected.

What's new in FTM 5.0:

  • Multi-Segment Download Acceleration provides acceleration for high latency Internet connections. Download acceleration is only used if a file is greater than 2 MB and download acceleration is set to No Speed Limit in FTM's options.
  • File verification. FTM 4.0 validated each data block as files were transferred. FTM 5.0 goes one step further to verify file integrity by validating the full file after it has been written to disk.

Please visit FTM Central for more information about FTM 5.0.  If you are using Windows XP SP2, you may need to follow the XPSP2 Install Instructions to install FTM 5.0.

For those of you that do not know, the FTM is what is used by all of the beta testers as well as MSDN subscribers to download software from Microsoft's servers.  In the past, beta testers had a hard time getting the latest builds right after they are released mainly because the servers get hammered by thousands of users trying to download the latest ISO. The multi-segment download acceleration in this new version will greatly increase the download speed for testers.

Releasing the new download manager to testers when a new build is released to testers would be perfect timing.  Could this be a sign that a new Vista build is coming soon? Or is it just a coincidence?
